Network for the listeners of the MedicCast EMS Podcast

I know that there are supposed to be some basic emergency preparedness for situations such as fires. tornadoes, and minor medical emergencies in the home.

But what more can we do besides stocking up on canned foods, water, and necessities for a few days?

One of the reasons why I ask is because of the fact that this past weekend, a severe thunderstorm rolled through Michigan and a lot of poeple were without power from anywhere from a few minutes to now. And some people are still not expected to have power till mid-weekend or the end of the weekend.

I gotta ask another question. Would a generator be feasible if it came down to it if it isn't going to be needed except every few years?

The last time anyone in Michigan or even in the Midwest lost power for more than a few hours was a few years ago when there was a power outage to not only Michigan, but also to Ohio, New York, a part of Ontario, Canada, and I believe Indiana and Illinois.

Shirley,

Great post! I think you should check out Rick Russotti's most recent episode over at the Mitigation Journal podcast. He did a whole thing on sheltering in place and what is needed in a home disaster kit. You can also contact him directly on this and I know he would be happy to give you some resources to use for yourself and your community.

Keep in touch and thanks for listening to the show!

Hi Shirley,
I was wondering how you made out with your thoughts on this topic. Have you done anything to prepare? I have a copy or two of the Home Emergnecy Pocket Guide...you might find interesting. I can send you one if you'd like.

Rick

Teaching kids how to use 911

From time to time a news story emerges about a toddler dialing 911 and summoning help for an adult in distress. Aside from the wonder most of us feel at the presence of mind these little people display, it brings up an interesting point about teaching children about the emergency system in general, and when it’s appropriate for them to call for help.

NBC’s Trauma showing signs of life…

Rumors are swirling around the internet that,  thanks to a recent ratings boost, the love-it-or-hate-it Trauma may be resuscitated by NBC after all.

NBC had planned to run the original 13 episodes that it had ordered, but now rumor has it that more episodes are forthcoming. Some believe that the ever-perplexing Nielsen ratings are responsible, but others believe that a groundswelling of fan support has tipped the scales in the show’s favor. Apparently there’s a #savetrauma campaign on Twitter, and fan fiction has sprung up surrounding the characters, always a sign of true fan loyalty.
