- About Me:
- 43 yrs old, started off in the trade as a Combat Medic Tech in British Army, moved to Special Forces [UK]. Also trained as Operating Theatre Tech. Spent a year in India/ Nepal travelling working in health care system, also served in Sultans Armed Forces, Saudi Armed Forces. Now a family man here in Perth, Australia working as a Paramedic and also operating training/ supply business and working towards Wilderness Medical Institute training.
Now work industrial/remote in charge of a Medical system with the closest hospital about 50 minutes away......off road. Also try and keep my skills up with the occasional shift in Metro.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply as ive been extremly busy these past few weeks.
Wow! I haven't heard about Dr Wilkes wanting to take intubation off the AP skill list! thats insane! Would you be able to tell me why? Too many esophageal intubations?
I've noticed that paramedics do not use thermometers and just use the back of their hands to feel for elevated temp.
When I attended an MVA the other night, we wore the reflective flak-jackets while treating a critical patient and i could see how inadequate they were compared to other companies.
I am happy that i am working with a Paramedic because if a patient requires treatment or a skill, which i am unable to provide (as i am a volley) then the paramedic can take over and just assist. I think there should be more Paramedics in all regions but SJA are VERY picky about the people who go through the program and their is a chronic shortage of Paramedics (and Nurses in the health system).
I am only a volley, so there is nothing much i can do, except deal with it. Hopefully SJA will make some changes but it may just be wishful-thinking.

Yeah, you do have a point...A good one in fact.
If SJA was taken under govt. many things would go a lot smoother. Your comment about 20 mins P1 is so true. On that note; The other weekend my friend in Serpentine responded to a call near mandurah because Pinjarra and the Mandurah Depots were out in the City either running calls or being ramped at hospitals.
We are aparently trialling anti-emietcs as well as Adrennallin for Cardiac arrests (PACA Trial).
The Uniform is being revamped - Apparently but seldom few people have seen them. They're apparently switching to Long sleeved shirts with velcro name tags and epaulettes.
Selling the ambulances to country depots with 150 - 200,000kms on them is stupid. Only the major country towns have EMS cover thus time to scene and to appropriate medical care is extended!. It pisses me off!
I'm pretty sure NT is run by SJA as well. I spoke to one of the "oldies" from SJA a few hours today and he said that having a private company running the state EMS should lower prices and increase competetion. I said SJA has no competetion and he had no counter argument. lol
YOu have made some very good arguments and im going to see what my Depot manager says about SJA (behind closed doors, of course.)

- Yeah, most of the AP's i work with hate SJA but don't want to work for the other private companies. What did you think was shit about SJA?
I work as an EN at RPH and i am doing a shift on Aussie Day so we should see quite a bit.

NBC’s Trauma showing signs of life…
Rumors are swirling around the internet that, thanks to a recent ratings boost, the love-it-or-hate-it Trauma may be resuscitated by NBC after all.
NBC had planned to run the original 13 episodes that it had ordered, but now rumor has it that more episodes are forthcoming. Some believe that the ever-perplexing Nielsen ratings are responsible, but others believe that a groundswelling of fan support has tipped the scales in the show’s favor. Apparently there’s a #savetrauma campaign on Twitter, and fan fiction has sprung up surrounding the characters, always a sign of true fan loyalty.
CSI for EMS
EMS personnel are an invaluable part of a crime scene, and their unique observations can greatly impact the course of investigation, according to Beonicia Loveless, Medical Examiner Investigator and Child Abuse Investigator for the State of Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Ms. Loveless gave a presentation called “Crime Scene Etiquette for EMS” that went beyond the usual basics of not disturbing the scene or cutting through bullet holes.

Iraqi police learn from US Army medics
It’s not often that positive news comes out of Iraq. So it’s refreshing to hear that medics from the 252nd Combined Arms Battalion, 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team are teaching Iraqi federal police medical skills used to treat traumatic injuries. Part of the Iraqi Security Agreement, security forces in Baghdad are learning the skills they’ll need to stand on their own when the US forces eventually leave.
