Recruiting / Retaining Students

I am an EMT instructor and in our area it is typical to lose 50% or more of the EMT-B students prior to graduation. Also, each year when it comes time to enroll it's a challenge just to get enough students to hold class. Has anybody out there found an effective method of recruiting and retaining EMT students?

there was an article recently in JEMS about recruiting and retaining students. But it also is in reference to FF/EMT's.

Here's the link.

This is an issue here in Maryland, too. The state offers free EMT-B training through the University of Maryland and will bring classes into local fire houses. The caveat is that they must have a minimum of 15 persons to start the class and a minimum of 10 people to keep going. Those that have a class drop below 10 can pick up a later class starting at the unit with which they left off.

We constantly try to encourage people to train but with many different schedules in play, it is hard to find time for people that is agreeable to all.

This is a great topic and I hope others chime in with their ideas.
