Student Study Tips

In episode 99 (V-Tach, Lidocaine), I discussed some of my thoughts on some good study tips for new EMT/Paramedic students. This was in response to a listener email for Travis, who was embarking on his EMS education journey and wanted some advice.

I thought it would be a great idea to put this topic up here on the forums for the rest of you to chime in with what works (or doesn't work) for you. If you are an EMS student, how do you prepare for classroom success?

If you are an EMS instructor, what things do you see your students doing to succeed in class and how do you counsel them to study or prepare for EMS instruction?

Leave your tips or questions on study habits and skills here and we can create a great resource for the MedicCast listeners!

I have some documentation that suggests that highlighting does not work. That taking breaks whenever you feel your mind wander and come back with a fresh, teachable mind. Also, writing down things you read seems to make it stick more. Mnenomics work very well for me.

Also, make a habit of taking a break every chapter and do something different because studies have shown that breaking from the same subject and doing something COMPLETELY different truly helps. Shoot some hoops, play a game, anything that's unrelated.

Also, read a chapter before a nap or bedtime. I've heard sleeping after a subject seems to make it sink in.
